The Home Office have announced that old and minor cautions and convictions will soon be filtered out of the criminal record checks requested by employers.
Serious sexual and violent offences, and offences that resulted in a custodial sentence will remain on checks. Similarly, no filtering will occur in the case of those convicted of multiple offences.
Otherwise, however, adult cautions will be filtered out after six years, and cautions issued to young offenders after two. An adult conviction resulting in a non-custodial sentence will be filtered out after 11 years and a similar conviction in the case of young offenders after five and a half years.
The Home Office said the changes, which it expects to affect “thousands of volunteers and workers” each year, are due to be implemented within weeks, following Parliamentary scrutiny.
