Fewer marriages end in divorce

According to the latest statistics, fewer marriages are ending in divorce. Whilst this seems rather positive, the fall in the number of divorces is consistent with the decline in the number of people getting married in the first place.

Nowadays, people choose not to formalise their relationship with marriage and live together as cohabiting couples. However, people must be warned that you are not entitled to the same legal remedies as a divorcing couple when you are separating from your cohabitee. For instance, there is no such thing as a common law wife. Of course, there are certain instances, whereby a partner would be entitled to claim against their former cohabitee for financial provision, but it is not a clear cut as financial provision on divorce.
