Good Divorce Week 2021
Is there any such thing as a ‘good divorce’? Well, National Good Divorce Week aims to help couples who feel that they can no longer live together achieve just that. Running from the 29th November to the 3rd December 2021, Good Divorce Week is a chance to kick-start a conversation right across the UK to discuss how parents can put the needs of their children at the front and centre of any separation.
While it might be the right thing for two adults to go their separate ways, if there are children involved then a divorce or separation is always traumatic, challenging and worrying. Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, family stresses have been put under even greater strain, making divorce even more impactful for already worried youngsters.
Good Divorce Week aims to get family law professionals, support organisations and parents talking. Guides have been produced and supported by some of the country’s leading family law experts, giving parents honest, no-nonsense advice on how to make an ‘uncoupling’ as painless as possible for those who will feel the impact most severely – the children.
Resolution, a group of leading legal experts and solicitors, feels that it’s time to talk about divorce in a more child-centric way. While the courts always try to put the needs and requirements of the children first, it can be difficult for parents to see through their own hurt and upset at the end of their relationship and understand just how much it affects their children.
Good Divorce Week aims to bring the spotlight back onto the kids and help create a more constructive atmosphere that ensures children won’t feel that it’s ‘their fault’ mum and dad are getting divorced, or how to avoid the bitterness and the ‘blame game’ that can sour relationships for a lifetime.
Parenting through Separation Guide
As part of Good Divorce Week, the national group Resolution have released a detailed guide that aims to lay out exactly what parents and legal professionals can do to make a divorce as child-focused as possible. Resolution’s Parenting through Separation Guide is completely free and can be downloaded here.
By sharing stories and discussing matters such as listening to the concerns of children, how extended family members can become involved, and the role of the ‘co-parent’ after a divorce, they hope to remove some of the stigma and get rid of the jargon that can often muddy the process. Produced by the group’s Parenting after Parenting Committee, the guide is full of useful information and goes hand in hand with the efforts of Resolution members across the country to raise the profile of child-centric divorce processes.
