Top district judge warns of the burden caused by rise in litigants in person

The new President of the Association of Her Majesty’s District Judges has raised concern regarding the rise of more people representing themselves within Court proceedings, and identified that without legal knowledge and skills possessed by professional lawyers, it will inevitably lead to less favourable outcomes for parties and will reduce the likelihood of there being discussions outside of Court, which can often avoid the expense and time taken by a full contested Court hearing. The situation will deteriorate further with the recent changes in the availability of legal aid for civil proceedings including family and more and more people may contemplate thinking about representing themselves at Court.
