Two strikes and you are out

On Monday 3rd December 2012 a range of new offences and punishments came into force under the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012, including the “two strikes and you’re out” rule.

Under the “two strikes” rule, mandatory life sentences will be imposed on those convicted of a second serious sexual or violent offence.

Other sentencing measures newly in force include extended determinate sentences for those convicted of serious sexual and violent crimes, preventing release from prison until they have served at least two-thirds of their sentence; and an increase in the length of curfew requirements under community orders from six months to 12 months, with daily curfew periods rising from 12 to 16 hours.
